This is my (Suno Ano) website. It is composed and driven exclusively by free software. This website is seamlessly
integrating into my daily working environment (GNU Emacs + DebianGNU/*) which therefore means it becomes a
fully fledged and automatized publishing and communication platform. It will be under construction until 2011.

Purpose of this Website

I do not exactly know what I should tell you folks about this website since it will evolve over time. As of now, it seems the website will be used as a digital platform to take notes, report and/or discuss certain things, publish knowledge etc. at its core but is not limited to that. I will use it to mirror my thoughts into the net and see what echos back from there. Therefore the website becomes a moving target — it will wander wherever it serves me best.

Because it reflects my life in a 24-7 manner I will use it for private, scientific, business etc.1 communication with the net and all forms of life, biological by nature or not (smart enough2 to hook up to the net that is) — anything is welcome on my website ... anything may happen ...

Madness has no purpose. Or reason. But it may have a goal.
                — Spock, "The Alternative Factor", stardate 3088.7

In essence, the visitor will come across a lot of tech stuff (free software, hardware, etc.), finance, living a life in liberty and peace, knowledge, sport, culture, management, music, motion pictures, travelling, leisure and lots of stuff I do not even know by myself as of now ...

Enough said, feel free to walk around ...

Siteindex

My website consists of three parts — weblog, schedule and the wiki part. Those who are interested in the weblog just click Weblog in the menu to the left. Use the same magic if you are interested in my schedule i.e. click My schedule in the menu at the left.

Below you got a siteindex of the wiki part. It lists all the pages on my website/platform except for the weblog and schedule part — they have their own, follow links above — in alphabetical order. Also, please make sure you read at least this before you dive deeper into this website in order do understand the information on my website.

Contexts

Well, whereas the index above is great since it lists all pages on this website/platform so folks can start from there and/or get an overview it does not reflect certain connections among pages or even dedicated sections onto some particular pages.

This section is used to inform about contexts i.e. several pages and/or sections onto pages forming a semantically related context. However, any page, section, subsection listed here can of course be found in the above index ... it is just that this section might save a lot of time and confusing for folks who just stepped in here ;-]

  • FAI (Fully Automatic Installation) is what makes the difference if you have to spend 2 weeks or just 2 hours to set up a bunch of new computers.
  • Udev.
  • What I think about currently available UIs (User Interfaces).
  • A page providing miscellaneous information
    • Linux & Partition Types
    • some Iceweasel add-ons I use
    • Linux and its System Request Keys
    • How to name a host and what about the naming of users on a host? Clearly, we need a naming scheme!
  • Installing, configuring and maintaining vsftpd, a professional FTP (File Transfer Protocol) server.
  • SSH (Secure Shell) is a network protocol that allows data to be exchanged using a secure (encrypted) channel between two computers. SSH is typically used to log into a remote machine and execute commands, but it also supports tunneling, forwarding arbitrary TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) ports and X11 connections; it can transfer files using the associated SFTP (SSH File Transfer Protocol) or SCP (Secure Copy)protocols.
  • File Synchronization using Unison
  • Firewalling got its dedicated page.

GNU Emacs

This context is about GNU Emacs, the Swiss army knife that allows for hyperspace travelling ;-]

  • The main page for GNU Emacs.
  • For short notes and my GNU Emacs cheat sheet click here ...
  • I use Gnus to do e-mail and news - it is the biggest GNU Emacs package and thus deserves a dedicated page.
  • Another two packages that should go on a dedicated pages are planner-mode respectively org-mode, my PIM (Personal Information Manager) tools.

    • Go here for the HTML version or download the
    • plain text version
  • Muse is what I use to write/manage this website.
  • Document engeineering with ConTeXt.
  • Python hacking with GNU Emacs.

Business

This context is about doing business in the 21st century, how to sense profitable investments and how to manage. It is also about how to proof expertise, social/ethical competence as well as unfaltering will for steadily improvements of all sorts to others. Last but not least it is about how to be happy with work, how to create win-win situations for you, co-workers, superiors etc.

  • The main page about business on my website/platform.
  • This website/platform has a dedicated ads page.
  • This page is the business part of my schedule.
  • What is the right type of company for me/us? How can I reduce costs and increase revenue simply by picking the right type of company? And last but not least, which jurisdiction is the one that suits me best? Is one company enough or shall we found more than one — if so shall they be placed in the same jurisdiction?
  • Finances ... no money —> no nothing ... plain and simple!
    • The main page with regards to finances.
    • How to implement a flexible payment system into Plone.
  • Management and leadership is an utterly important part of business success.
  • Marketing — what is the best product worth if no one knows it?!
  • Go global, think global!
  • IT solutions which provide value and integrate smoothly into humans lives are a mandatory thing.
  • Creating outstanding documents for business purposes.

Into this, ... for technicians (like I am for example), I recommend reading some basic literature about economics:

ISBN Language Title Author
3423508639 German Basiswissen Betriebswirtschaft Dr. Volker Schulz
3423508159 German Basiswissen Rechnungswesen Dr. Volker Schulz
0060559535 English Reengineering the Corporation Michael Hammer and James Champy

After reading those books, every scientist/technician should be able to follow business talks and at least grasp the basics when the business breed happens to chat at the dinner table. However, as of now I have not found an antidote I might use for the usual law chat ... I usually end up grinning like a little fox ;-]

Mobility, Communication

This context covers mobility and what IT solutions to think about in this regards. This context also covers communications e.g. email.

  • My dedicated page for those on the go.
  • Gnus and Gmane ... things I simply love.
  • A decent mail system is what I like a lot.

Software

This context about software development and computer science. It is not so much about administering and the like. If you are more interested into system administration you might want to check out the Debian and/or Security context on this page. Last but not least, the Networking context might also be of interest ...

  • My software main page.
  • .NET a potentially nice thing (maybe?).
  • SCM (Software Configuration Management).
  • Developing with/for Plone respectively Zope
    • Plone development (ditched in favor of Dolmen)
    • Dolmen development

Hardware

This context is about hardware in particular.

  • My main page about hardware.

Datacenter

This context is about datacenters and related information.

  • My main page about datacenters.

Security

This context is about security in various domains e.g. network, local machine, etc. Following pages are considered being part of this context:

  • Debian and Security in general.
  • Full-disk encryption
  • Linux-VServer
  • Xen
  • Network Exploration/Reconnaissance and Security Auditing, a subsection of my Network example page.
  • UTM (Unified Threat Management).
  • Security with Plone.
  • Firewalling got its dedicated page.

Virtualization

This context is about virtualization. In computing, virtualization is a broad term that refers to the abstraction of computer resources. One useful definition is: A technique for hiding the physical characteristics of computing resources from the way in which other systems, applications, or end users interact with those resources. This includes making a single physical resource (such as a server, an operating system, an application, or storage device) appear to function as multiple logical resources; or it can include making multiple physical resources (such as storage devices or servers) appear as a single logical resource.

  • Linux-VServer
  • Xen
  • OpenVZ
  • Storage virtualization with LVM (Logical Volume Manager).

Networking

I became obvious I needed a networking context. This context is a view onto several pages/sections/etc. on this website/platform which are somehow related to networking i.e. computer networks.

  • Computer/IT (Information Technology) Networks, the main page for networking on my website (Theory).
  • An example for some small to mid-sized real-world computer network (Practice).
  • Networking hardware on my dedicated hardware page.
  • VLANs (Virtual Local Area Networks)
  • IT solutions cannot go without the network and vice versa.

Apache and Friends

This is a context about the Apache webserver (probably the most-used industry-class werbserver on the net today) and related software within this domain that helps to serve data to the WWW (World Wide Web).

  • The Apache main page.

Dolmen / Plone / Zope / Python

This context is about Plone, a world-class CMS (Content Management System) and the foundation it builds on (Zope). Zope is an application server respectively programming framework that allows for OS (Operating System) agnostic software development.

Recently there also appeared a new shining star on the horizon which goes by the name Dolmen — I now stopped working with/on Plone in favor of Dolmen simply because working with Plone is no fun anymore. Plone has become way to fat and confusing to work with over the years — I need something that works with me, not against me.

Plone

  • The Plone main page.
  • Plone has so called Products which are add-ons, stacked atop a generic Plone instance. Also, recently so-called Python eggs have became very popular and may very well replace Zope products in the long run.
  • Storage is an interesting as well as important subtopic with Plone/Zope.
  • Plone User Accounts and Roles, who can do what at which point in time and who is responsible for some particular task after all.
  • Plone can come in various visual appearances.
  • Developing with/for Plone respectively Zope
    • Plone development
    • Python
  • Security with Plone.
  • How to implement a flexible payment system into Plone.

Zope

  • The Zope main page.

Dolmen

  • The Dolmen main page.

Python

See software context.

Database Management System

This context is about database management systems and related information.

  • PostgreSQL, probably the best FLOSS (Free/Libre Open Source Software) DBMS in existence.
  • CouchDB is a free and open source document-oriented database. It is perfect for those who do web application development. CouchDB comes with replication features built-in and therefore can do load balancing, high availability and fault tolerance out of the box — you can run it on an embedded device, a single computer, or a cluster of thousands of nodes if need be. It can store huge amounts of data, PB and more if need be.

1. As a matter of fact, I am a net addictive so there is no border between all those matters in my life anyways.

2. At this point, the author is of course aware of the fact that the human race always tends to assume their own mindset, culture, thinking and technology as superior. That of course is irony and amusing until the human race meets their overlords at some point.
